August 1942 the Neffsville Auxiliary Fire Company No. 1 began,
operating under the Neffsville Fire Company Charter. It was
formed as a war emergency in the event of trouble in Southern Manheim
Township. Robert Posey of Shirk Motor Express Company gave
building space to house a Hahn 1921 model 500 gallon fire engine,
which was then the property of the Neffsville Fire Company.
Shirk Motor Express Co. gave the services of a group of their
employees to operate the fire equipment in event of fire calls during
their working hours, in conjunction with the volunteer members of the
company.
In the latter
part of 1945, it was decided to apply for a charter for a separate
fire company, to be called the Southern Manheim Township Fire Company.
In March 1946 a charter was granted to the Southern Manheim Township
Fire Company. On April 24, 1946 the first meeting of the
Southern Manheim Township Fire Company was held under the new charter,
and was presided over by H.C. Shiffer. Norman C. Young was the
first Fire Chief. |
